Slack blogger is slack

So, I'm terrible at keeping a regular blog it would appear.  No matter how many times i tell myself that i am going to do it, going to stay focused... i just get dis....oh shiney

 

Whats been happening....

• Still decidedly addicted to tatting
• Purchased a new heat sealer - testing a new packaging for my soaps
• Lots of procrastination
• Started dating - sort of 

Now back to this blogging business, do you have any tips or tricks that will help keep me on track? Help keep me motivated?

Homeless Connect

Here's a peak at the handmade soaps I'm making to donate to Homeless Connect

Homeless Connect

A fairly new craft friend of mine brought Homeless Connect to my attention via facebook the other day. This is something i have decided to put my support behind and urge you to do the same where possible.  Over the next few days i will be making a custom batch of handmade soaps to donate to the cause.

"Homeless Connect brings together business and community groups twice a year to give free services to the homeless or those at risk"

Services include:

• medical care
• legal advice
• accommodation referral
• personal grooming items 
• clothes

You can donate specific items to the following locations between Monday, 12 March and Friday, 4 May 2012:

• Council libraries - shampoo, face wash, soap and other toiletries
• Local ward offices - non-perishable food items
• Brisbane Salvation Army stores - new underwear and socks, blankets, clothing, shoes and towels

March Madness

A little quiet on the blogging front, things have been so very busy at home in recent weeks.  I have finally caught up with all my etsy listings - there are now a whole heap of shiney new necklaces listed, including a personal favourite Rick Astley pendant ;)

I have also had a massive wardrobe clean out - "operation goth clean out" as it has been affectionately know as. I am still sorting through the massive pile of clothes... tagging... measuring... ironing and preparing for sale. Hopefully i will have all of these listed on eBay within a few weeks. 

Yesterday we welcomed a new addition to our family - his name is Charlie Bear and he is a super chilled little kitty cat.

Next up on the cards is the BrisStyle indie Twilight Markets on the 27th of April - be sure to come and check them out.

The making of Totoro

Just over a week ago a friend of mine sent me a message on facebook with a special request. A Totoro shaped soap for his wife.

I love the challenge of making new things so i said "sure"....... one problem, i am in no way a sculptor. I googled my little heart out trying to find either a mould, or something i could create a mould from (plastic figurine etc).  I came up empty handed.

Now, I'm usually the first one to throw my hands up and give up - i have very little patience for things i cant do RIGHT NOW, needless to say i have a lot of unfinished projects on my table.... but this time i was determined.

So i got out my klean klay and a picture of Totoro and started sculpting......

After a lot of swearing... a few dropped tools.... and a bit more swearing... i finally had something i was happy with.

Next step - box him up

For this i just used part of an old postal box i had floating around and a crap load of masking tape - need to be sure to leave at least 5mm around the sides for strong enough walls when the mould is produced.

Pinkysil is my current moulding choice - i like that its an equal 2 part mix and i just need to eyeball levels in cups rather than drag out the scales and calculate ratios.

I usually fill to 5mm-10mm above the moulding object, in this case it was closer to 15mm as i had mixed up a little too much pinkysil.

The next step is to let is set and then unmould it - though i forgot to take a picture of this step.  I removed all the tape from the glass plate and carefully pulled the cardboard off from around the sides, then gently lifted the set mould off of the clay sculpt beneath.

Now - you're supposed to let this sit over night, 12-24hrs is what ive read from various moulding instructions.  Personally i do not have the patience - so a quick clean out of any excess clay and then i filled it with a melt and pour soap.

I did add a white layer of soap under there first, to pick out the detail on his belly and eyes.  I could've let this sit and set naturally over night - but once again impatience got the better of me... as is often the case when im creating something new and want to see if i has turned out.......... so into the freezer for a 15min sleep

TA DA!!!!

He's a little rough around the edges... but he is 100% hand made and I'm super proud.  He will be off to his new home shortly :)

New year - New look

Starting with a new blog... And a large dose of staring at the screen with no idea what to type.

I guess i should start with some sort of introduction....

This is me.... In a wig

My name is Fiona, Fee for short... but never Fee-Fee *gag*.  I'm 30yrs old and live in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland. I fight with a 9-5 administration job and i run my own business DesignByFee in my spare time.

Two of my favourite things are making a noise and making a mess - both of which i get to do often.

I am craft mad and read far too many craft blogs for my own good.

I am not good a finishing thin......... i often get distracted...


I plan to blog about various crafts, either my own or others that i have found inspiring.  A bit of daily life thrown in for balance and some pretty pictures along the way.
